On Tuesday, 10th February 2026, Business Botswana participated in the Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) Public Hearing regarding the Botswana Power Corporation’s (BPC) proposed 46% electricity tariff adjustment.
During the hearing, Head of Policy and Research, Mr. Mpaphi Tsholofelo, presented Business Botswana’s position, supported by a comprehensive written submission informed by detailed cost analysis, member consultations, and a nationwide survey.
While acknowledging the need for cost-reflective tariffs to sustain a reliable electricity supply, Business Botswana emphasised that the proposed 46% increase is unreasonable and unaffordable, with the potential to negatively impact businesses and the broader economy. We therefore recommended a moderated, multi-year tariff adjustment, beginning with a single-digit increase in the first year to allow businesses adequate time to factor the additional costs into their financial planning and minimise economic disruption.
The hearing brought together key stakeholders, including Flotek, Tuli Block Association, BEMA, Khoemacau, Jindal, and Consumer Watchdog, among others, underscoring the importance of inclusive consultation in shaping balanced and sustainable regulatory outcomes.
Business Botswana further called on BERA to adopt an approach that protects consumers, promotes economic efficiency, and safeguards national competitiveness.
